âŊ How’s your fuel economy? From 23 mpg to 31 mpg on this much loved Touareg 2.5 TDI đ¯

đ Here we have a VW Touareg 2.5 TDI (2003 – 130,124 miles)
âšī¸ The long term owner had noticed that over the years it had slowly got louder, rougher and the fuel economy had dropped right down to a recent average of just 23 mpg.
đ On arrival we found a significant amount of vibration and bass rumble from the engine, a sure sign of the buildup present sapping the fuel economy. There were quite a few rattles present also, again from the engine vibration.
đģ Initial diagnostics found a lot of historic codes present which we documented and cleared which just left two issues:
1) Air quality sensor – short circuit to ground
2) Left hand cornering lamp and headlamp module – no signal comms.
âšī¸ The second of these codes would likely explain the fact that one of the bulbs in that cluster repeatedly keeps blowing.
đ Live data monitoring showed temperatures were where they should be across the board, but there was a significant overfuelling present due to the engine vibration.
đ¨âđ§ On with the clean and the excessive engine vibration took a while to really subside and quieten down. Needed an extra 15 minutes on this one to get it really smooth and quiet again and the rattles were gone.
