❗ You never know what you are going to find both under the bonnet 👀

⚠️ DPF issues? A proper diagnostic consultation is key to identify the root cause.

🚗 Here we have a BMW 118d (2008 – 158,778 miles) booked in for a diagnostic consultation to investigate a DPF issue with a potential DPF Clean to follow if needed.

🤔 Having preciously been looked at by a BMW dealer the owner was told that they couldn’t get it to regenerate and the DPF was blocked.

Having used us a couple of years ago for an Engine Carbon Clean the owner contacted us to investigate.

🔎 Initial inspection found that the MAF sensor was not attached which explained the MAF and IAT codes. (Soon as it was reattached then the codes switched from active to historic and then cleared successfully). One issue resolved 🎯

📊 Further investigation on the diagnostics found the usual DPF codes along with codes for 2 of the glowplugs and the glow plug controller. This will be the underlying cause for the DPF regeneration not working.

🔎📊 Further checks were performed to rule out the EGR and thermostat being an issue – the car appeared to be holding temperature OK at 85°C. The actual reading on the DPF differential pressure sensor showed between 19-25mbar at idle which suggests the DPF is NOT blocked. A healthy value should be approx 6-10mbar, but typically it won’t be blocked until much higher than 25mbar.

👨‍🔧 Conclusion on this one was now to replace the glowplug controller and the two glowplugs ASAP. Ironically the garage had replaced the other two earlier in the year, but didn’t suggest replacing these two or the controller at the time as a precautionary measure.

Once that is done then with a regeneration drive all should be good 👍
