đ Here we have a VW Golf 1.9 TDI (2009 – 86,508 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean.
âšī¸ Having been in the family for a while the owner had noticed a drop off in performance and fuel economy over the years.
đ Initial inspection found little of note in the engine bay with no obvious rattles or leaks, but a tell tale bass note present given the age and mileage.
đģ Initial diagnostics found multiple codes present for steering column ignition electrics, but the engine section was clear. We documented and cleared the codes and the ignition codes were straight back on again. Something for the owner to get looked at.
đ Live data monitoring showed good values across most of the components, but the coolant temperature took a very long time to get up to 90°C and dropped rapidly into the 70s when tested. Given the owner is planning a water pump change shortly we advised changing the thermostat at the same time to get it running back to the correct temperature (restoring fuel economy and emissions with it).
đ¨âđ§ On with the clean and the bass note soon subsided as the engine smoothed out and by the end was quiet, smooth and responsive again.
