â ī¸ Spending too much on fuel? Vehicle not as quiet, smooth, responsive or economical as it used to be?
đ Here we have a BMW 318d (2011 – 115,079 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean. The owner wanted to get this running back to its best and having just had a separate inlet manifold/valve clean (walnut blast) now had us here today to deal with the rest.
âšī¸ Remember – manual cleaning the inlet manifold/valves or EGR valve is the only way for those parts as they are too cold. It is complementary to our process which deals with the back of the turbo, combustion chamber, injector tips, pistons, cylinders and cats.
đ Initial inspection found no obvious issues in the engine bay, but there was significant vibration, rumble and lack of response from the carbon present.
đģ Initial diagnostics showed no issues present apart a brake vacuum sensor signal code.
đ Live data monitoring showed coolant temperature at its hottest 84°C which would indicate a thermostat not closing properly.
âšī¸ Thermostats have a key role in allowing the car to get the best fuel economy (MPG). A cold running vehicle will over fuel to compensate and that wasted fuel is wasted money.
đ¨âđ§ On with the clean and the engine soon smoothed out and quietened down and by the end it was much quieter, smooth and responsive again.
