Proper diagnostic assessment of the live data (and not just a simple code read) is key to getting a successful diagnosis, an effective clean and get a misbehaving vehicle back to its best.
We were called to look at a Ford Transit 2.2 TDCI on 275,286 miles. A workhorse for a local food company and relied on for daily deliveries. Not running like it should it with poor fuel economy and lack of power it was booked in for examination and clean up.
Now initial inspection showed a slight surging at idle (common on these engines, but very minor).
The code read showed NO FAULTS.
The only thing of note was the coolant temperature showing lower than centre position.
Now we know that codes only tell part of the story, but the live data told the story…
Coolant temperature on arrival after extensive use was only at 65°C. After extensive testing we managed to creep this up into the 70s, but still nowhere close to running temperature – new thermostat required.
injector fuelling was high on injector 4, but with the age and mileage the fuelling from dirty injectors was all over the place.
We monitored the injectors throughout the clean and by the end all the other injectors had dropped fuelling compared to 4 which stuck out like a sore thumb – injector 4 worn and would soon likely need replacing…
fuel pressure was struggling to reach the target value and surging slightly. It was minor (have seen far worse), but this is potentially down to a known issue – a new PRV/Software Update/Recalibration required.
Much smoother, quieter and responsive again after the clean and the underlying issues can now be resolved to get it back to its best.
