Spending too much on fuel? MOT or service due? Vehicle not as quiet, smooth, responsive or economical as it used to be?
Here we have a VW Caddy (2009 – 129,567 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean. The vehicle had recently failed on emissions and he wanted to get this running back to its best and through the MOT.
Initial inspection found an initial wobble at idle indicating engine mount wear and significant vibration, rumble and lack of response from the carbon present.
Initial diagnostics showed no engine issues present apart a code linked to another code in the A/C section.
Live data monitoring showed coolant temperature at its hottest 81°C which would indicate a thermostat not closing properly and sure enough a test showed the temperature dropping rapidly.
Thermostats have a key role in allowing the car to get the best fuel economy (MPG). A cold running vehicle will over fuel to compensate and that wasted fuel is wasted money, plus increased emissions.
On with the clean and the engine soon smoothed out and quietened down and by the end it was much quieter, smooth and responsive again, but the wobble was now clear and present – worn engine mounts.
UPDATE
The owner has replaced the thermostat and engine mounts and combined with the clean the vehicle has sailed through the retest with a PASS
