MOT Issues due to thermostat - VW Transporter 1.9 TDI (2005 - 134,788 miles)

MOT Issues due to thermostat – VW Transporter 1.9 TDI (2005 – 134,788 miles) – Part 1

🌡️Thermostats play a key role in getting your engine running at the right temperature. Why is this important? A cold running engine will be inefficient – causing poor fuel economy and increased emissions (plus increased carbon buildup).

🚗 Here we have a VW Transporter (2005 – 134, 788 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean.

ℹ️ The vehicle was running OK, but with the MOT due soon and having had a FAILURE on emissions last year wanted it checking over and cleaning up.

🔎 Initial inspection found no obvious issues in the engine bay and the engine running fairly well for the age.

💻 Initial diagnostics showed minimal code history or active codes.

📊 Live data monitoring identified the culprit. The coolant temperature was only getting up to 75°C when tested and dropped into the 60’s when the heating was turned on – new thermostat required.

👨‍🔧 On with the clean and it soon smoothed out, quietened down and by the end it was quiet, smooth and responsive again. The owner can now get a new thermostat fitted prior to MOT.
