🚗 Here we have a Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi (2007 – 129,329 miles) booked in along with 3 other vehicles. This Astra had recently failed the MOT on emissions.
🔎 Initial inspection found a significant bass noise from the engine indicating excessive vibration from carbon buildup. This vibration will cause over fuelling and increase emissions levels (plus reduce fuel economy).
💻 Initial diagnostics found error codes for the glow plug controller/relay and for an O2 sensor circuit.
📊 Live data showed it running a little rich. We ruled out the thermostat being the culprit (a cold running vehicle will create more emissions) as the temperature rose to 95°C and when tested dropped briefly to 81°C before swiftly recovering to 88°C.
👨🔧 On with the clean and the excessive bass note soon subsided as we proceeded and by the end was quiet, smooth and responsive again all ready for retest.
