đ Here we have a VW Caddy 2.0 SDI (2008 – 234,320 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean.
âšī¸ The owner had reported it being noisy, poor on fuel economy, running a little rough and down on power.
đ Initial inspection found little of note in the engine bay with no obvious rattles or leaks. There was a tell tale bass rumble to the engine and associated boom to the exhaust. There was a fair amount of engine vibration also.
đģ Initial diagnostics found an active code for an EGR due to a blanking plate which had been fitted.
đ Live data monitoring showed decent values for most components with injectors looking good, however it was running cold at 67°C despite being warmed up extensively.
âšī¸ A cold running engine will overfuel to compensate and cause a drop in fuel economy and an increase in emissions. A new thermostat required for this one.
đ¨âđ§ We finally managed to get it warm enough to make an effective clean. On with the clean and after just ten minutes the bass note started to go, the engine smoothed out and quietened down, but as the overall engine vibration subsided the underlying wobble came to the fore – engine mount wear. By the end it was much quieter, smooth and responsive again, but the engine mount wobble remained.
âšī¸ Over time excessive engine shake from a dirty engine will cause excessive engine mount wear. This one needs new engine mounts to eliminate the wobble.
