‘I have been having issues of the car engine malfunction light coming on. It shows a fault code of p0299’
Initial inspection found no obvious issues in the engine bay with no rattles and shakes, but a tell tale rumble in the engine from the carbon present and an exhaust note not quite right.

P0299 Turbo Underboost had been on recently and other codes in other parts of the car for speakers, old bulb codes, heated mirrors and ECU communication codes.
Live data is where things started getting interesting.
1 – DPF soot levels would indicate it was blocked, but no DPF codes present (usually meaning DPF was no longer present).
2 – The vehicle running at 74°C maximum due to the thermostat stuck open – the original cause of the DPF issue.
️ After discussing with the owner it was clear that the place that ‘fixed’ the DPF issue removed the DPF and remapped it. After a little more discussion it became clear that the turbo underboost issues had only presented themselves after the DPF ‘fix’ and remap.
We continued with the clean and It soon smoothed out, quietened down and by the end it was quiet, smooth and responsive again.

Can you carbon clean a petrol engine?

What are signs of carbon build up?

This then clogs up EGR valves, inlet manifolds and DPFs.
