Here we have a Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCI (2016 – 36,621 miles) booked in after the owner wanted to get it checked out and cleaned up due to a concern over a decline in fuel economy.
Initial inspection found little of note in the engine bay with no rattles or obvious leaks and although three was a bass note present from the buildup present this wasn’t excessive for the mileage.
Initial diagnostics found no engine related code history and just codes logged for intermittent electrical issues in the driver and passenger door controls mainly. With these documented and cleared for the owner we proceeded.
Live data appeared good with coolant temperatures rising to 89°C and when tested only dropping to 85°C. The DPF soot content was up at 92/255 with a comparable back pressure reading. Given the owner does mainly short journeys we discussed the need to keep minimum ¼ tank fuel at all times and give it a regular good run to allow regeneration.
On with the clean and the bass note present soon subsided as the engine vibration smoothed out and by the end it was quiet, smooth and responsive again.
We also helped the owner get to grips with the inbuilt sat nav system and talked them through the functionality.
