Here we have a Ford Transit 1.8 TDCi (2004 – 74,782 miles) booked in for a diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean.
ℹ️ The owner has reported an occasional stutter when cold and general poor performance.
Initial inspection of the engine bay found little of note apart from excessive vibration and associated bass rumble from the buildup present.
Initial diagnostics found no codes present.
Live data however showed the injector offsets up on injectors 1 and 3 and down on injectors 2 and 4 – a fairly normal starting point for a dirty engine. Coolant temperatures were cool when we arrived, but soon warmed up to 92°C and thermostat test only dropped to 86°C.
On with the clean and the live data monitoring showed injectors 1, 2 and 4 all dropping their fuelling to compensate for injector 3 which started to stick out like a sore thumb on the live data. By the end it was nice and smooth and quiet in comparison, but does look like injector 3 is indeed worn and may need replacing in the near future if the symptoms persist.
