We dived straight into the live data and sure enough the vehicle was running very hot at 112°C and had to pop the bonnet and pop the heating on full to bring the temperatures down to 98°C.
On with the clean and we kept the bonnet up and heating on full hot to vent the temperature (it still ran at 100°C under these conditions) and crept it through the clean. By the end it was quiet, smooth and responsive again and the owner can now sort out a new thermostat ASAP.
