Engine Carbon Clean on a VW Golf 1.4 TSI (2009 – 67,399 miles)

Here we have a 2009 VW Golf 1.4 TSI on 67,399 miles booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean after the engine management light had kept appearing on cold starts for a while.

📊 Diagnostics confirmed the owner’s suspicion of the Regulating Flap for Intake Air malfunction error which was causing the problem. With this being intake side it is all about whether we get it hot enough for the carbon to burn away so it was ‘worth a try’.

⚙️ With code cleared we proceeded with the clean being careful not to block up the oil intake pipe (common issue on these if not done properly) and had this on the gas for 50 minutes. Now much quieter, smooth, economical and responsive again and so far the error has not returned.

Feedback from the owner…

‘It’s driving really well thanks. Took it out after you left and it felt a lot smoother, idles much better and fuel economy reached 59mpg on the A1… highest it’s ever been before is 39 on a run! Taken it out again this morning and not had the error code kick in yet so will monitor it! Thanks again!’
