Here we have a Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9 TDI (2004 – 135,167 miles) booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean. The owner likes to look after his vehicles and after a number of modifications and upgrades wanted to get it running sweetly. The owner had reported that the MPG had been worse than expected.
Initial inspection found little of note in the engine bay with no particular rattles or leaks, but the tell tale bass note from carbon buildup present.
Initial diagnostics found a few historical codes which we documented and cleared for the owner. Active issues appeared to be the left front wheel speed sensor.
Live data showed a very slight overfuel on injectors 2 and 4 which could just indicate some wear given the mileage. The temperature only rose as far as 88°C throughout the entire booking and with the heating turned back on rapidly dropped to 80°C. Not too bad given the age/mileage, but given the poor recent fuel economy a new thermostat may be wise.
On with the clean and the engine vibration soon dissipated and the rumble subsided along with it – by the end it was running smooth and quiet again.
