⚠️ Thermostats do an important job at keeping engine temperatures at just the right level so the engine is at peak fuel efficiency.
🌡️ Misbehaving thermostats can lead to no end of problems (and unless you know what to look for will go unnoticed as they typically don’t trigger diagnostics codes).
❄️ A cold running car will be inefficient and create higher emissions (making a car get dirtier quicker, using more fuel than it should and if a diesel with a DPF can stop the regeneration process).
🔥 A hot running car may well overheat if the radiator fans can’t cope.
🚗 Here we have a Vauxhall Astra 1.8 petrol (2008 – 104,910 miles) booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean as part of a multi-vehicle booking.
🔎 Initial inspection noted the radiator fan running continually which alerted us to a potential electrical issue or temperature issue. Initial diagnostics confirmed a code for coolant thermostat valve stuck.
📊 Live showed the radiator fan was just about keeping things under control for now with temperatures constantly 95°C and over.
👨🔧 With the above documented and discussed with the owner then we agreed to proceed slowly and keep an eye on the temperatures. On with the clean and slowly and surely the engine smoothed out, quietened down and thankfully the engine temps stayed steady, but hot. The owner can now get the thermostat dealt with.
