Sticking turbo? Diagnostic Consultation and Engine Carbon Clean – Volvo V70 2.0d (2010 – 98,652 miles)

💬 ‘WOW!! Smooth acceleration and up to speed quickly. No turbo issues…I was fully expecting the car to go into limp mode as soon as I put my foot down. When it didn’t I actually cheered!!…Restored my faith in this car’

⚠️ Vehicle not running like it should? Sticking turbo? Limp mode issues? Not as quiet, smooth, responsive or economical as it used to be?

🚗 Here we have a Volvo V70 2.0d (2010 – 98,652 miles) booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean after sticking turbo issues and declining MPG.

🔎 Initial inspection of the engine bay found little of note with no obvious rattles or leaks.

💻 Initial diagnostics found little of note, but the owner had been clearing the boost codes himself with an OBD reader.

📊 Live data was more interesting as the key observation was that it was running cold. The hottest we could get the vehicle to was 86°C with bonnet down and all cabin vents off, but with the fans on inside the coolant temperature dropped down to 75°C within a minute – a clear indication this needs a new thermostat. All other data looked good.

👨‍🔧 On with the clean and with it back up to a decent temperature it smoothed out and quietened down and the response returned.

💬 ‘Hi Adrian. Paul here with the Volvo V70 2.0D you cleaned today. Took her out for a spin. Initially didn’t notice a great deal of difference. Got her out to National speed limit…..WOW!! Smooth acceleration and up to speed quickly. No turbo issues. Took her out to the Motorway up to junction 28 and would have expected the turbo to throw a code before junction 26, nothing. Back down to junctIon 25 with cruise control on. Performed perfectly. Previously it would have dropped out of cruise control quite quickly. When joining the motorway, I filtered into the overtaking lane and opened her up. I was mortified when I looked down at the speedo to see that I was doing over – – mph. So, although it is early days, it would appear that the clean has sorted the turbo issues. Put my own code reader on when I got home, no DTC’s at all. 👍. Checked coolant temp, 70 degrees!! Going to get that thermostat changed soonest! Thanks again for your help. Restored my faith in this car.

💬’Very happy. I was expecting an improvement in vehicle performance based on other customer testimonials, however, because I have had so many issues with the turbo not working correctly, I was fully expecting the car to go into limp mode as soon as I put my foot down. When it didn’t I actually cheered!! Thanks again. Just in the process of banging something on Facebook for you.

📝’Contacted Adrian when my car developed an issue with the turbo that I suspected was down to carbon build up. Booked a clean and Adrian turned up on time, slightly early in fact. He explained the procedure, and the theory behind it, in some detail. I appreciated this because I had been a bit sceptical beforehand. He was also open and honest about the procedure, explaining that it might not cure my turbo issue. Although I did appreciate this before making the booking, it was nevertheless a refreshingly honest appraisal. Both before and during the clean a comprehensive diagnostic check was carried out. Thankfully there were no major issues. Adrian quickly identified an issue with the thermostat which was causing the engine to run cool. He explained why this could be an issue for me. Luckily the engine temp was high enough for the clean to continue. So, was it all worth it? Absolutely. The vehicle accelerates well and very smoothly. Most importantly the turbo behaved itself, and I gave it some welly, let me tell you!! As I had the clean carried out today, I cannot yet comment on whether it has affected my fuel consumption. I suspect that this will increase in line with the increased performance of the vehicle and particularly after I have my thermostat replaced. If you believe you vehicle might benefit from this procedure, give Adrian a call. You won’t be disappointed.‘ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
