Own a diesel? DPF light been coming on recently?

Here we have another BMW 530D (2007 – 109,696 miles) booked in for diagnostics health check due to the DPF light being on and off recently.

⛑️ Initial health check looked clear and then on to the diagnostics.

📊 Initial code scan showed the obvious DPF codes, but in addition glow plug 1 and 2 activation codes. This needs fixing before it will regenerate.

🔎 Further investigation showed the vehicle idling at 172°F (too cold to regenerate). We proceeded to turn off the cabin heating fans and the temperature did eventually climb up to the normal 185°F with repeated revving, but as soon as the heating was turned back on in the cabin the coolant temperature dropped back down to approx 170°F.

ℹ️ Thermostat issues and/or glow plug issues will disabled the DPF regeneration process in a BMW and hamper it in most vehicles.

NO DPF CLEAN REQUIRED – thankfully the backpressure on the DPF hadn’t climbed too high and sat at approx 40 mbar at idle so with new thermostats and the glow plug system fixed the regeneration process should spring back to life and it should regenerate again.

With this in mind we agreed with the owner to give it an Engine Carbon Clean to clean up the source of the dirt entering the DPF in future.
