Failed MOT? Diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean on a Ford Mondeo Taxi (2010 – 190,873 miles)

Here we have a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (2010 – 190,873 miles) that recently failed MOT. Plate value for emissions is 0.50 and was testing at 1.50.

ℹ️ As a licensed taxi operator in Nottingham it is vital to keep on the road and passing the MOT is key to staying on the road. After failing the test the owner was recommended to us to get it diagnosed, checked and cleaned up.

Physical inspection and diagnostics identified 3 main issues potentially contributing to an increased emissions level…

1️⃣ The rubber seal on the intake pipe (just after the MAF sensor) was crumpled in, allowing air into the intake. This is a common problem with the rubber on these Ford intakes of this vintage. This would cause the vehicle to over fuel slightly causing increased emissions.
2️⃣ Coolant temperature was down slightly which indicates a thermostat or temperature sensor issue. Again a cold running engine will not be as efficient, causing increased fuel consumption and increased emissions levels.
3️⃣ With the high mileage and especially with the above issues then the engine was dirty from the mileage, but especially the excessive emissions levels.

To help the owner with their retest we…

1️⃣ Reshaped the rubber insert and refitted it to seal the intake again.
2️⃣ Recommended a thermostat/temperature sensor replacement asap.
3️⃣ Gave it an extended Engine Carbon Clean to clean up the source of the emissions.

‍Live data showed that the injector fuelling at idle wasn’t as bad as it could be and throughout the clean we monitored as it trimmed back in to normal levels (given the mileage). The excessive bass note in the engine dissipated as it returned back to smooth running. By the end it was running smooth and quietly again.

Had Adrian carbon cleaning my Audi 2021 A4 tdi .waited to see results over a period of time .car runs smoothly and accelerates with ease The car seems to get to 60 mpg very quickly and just goes up from there so impressed. This was my first experience with F5 carbon and DPF clean. I was a little desperate as I had been let down twice by a larger franchise company. Mark the technician managed to fit me in at short notice, what a stroke of luck for me I found Mark to be an extremely knowledgeable and professional guy. After running the diagnostic and clearing a few issues he managed to get my DPF working properly and able to do the regeneration process on its own so only charged for the diagnostic even though I had booked for a full DPF cleaning. I cannot recommend F5 enough it's a real pleasure to deal with them. All round excellent service. Thank you guys.

Steve arrived to give my Jaguar xfs an engine carbon clean. Presently on 107,000 miles. Explained the process and was obviously very knowledgeable about the process and expected outcomes. And he was a thoroughly nice chap.
The V6 in the xfs is a quiet, smooth, powerful unit and I was not sure of what improvements I would get. Well, I’m impressed. The power delivery is smoother, the engine even quieter and 6 mpg better to boot.
If you want to do one thing to maintain and improve your motor, then this is what you should do.
