DPF Light from failed glow plug – BMW X1 (2012 – 120,613 miles) diagnostic consultation

⚠️ DPF issues usually have an underlying cause.

πŸ” We focus on the underlying cause when performing our analysis of what is happening with a vehicle.

πŸ›» Here we have a BMW X1 where the DPF light came on recently.

❗ The owner was originally enquiring about a DPF Clean, but as we found this would have been unnecessary as the DPF was NOT blocked.

⚠️ A DPF Clean is unnecessary and not recommended unless you have a blocked DPF.

🎯 The underlying cause with this one was a failed glow plug.

⚠️ Before regeneration will be attempted the vehicle needs to be warm enough (short journeys or old thermostats are an issue) and also enough fuel (approx ¼ tank minimum). Other components are then checked and BMWs like these NEED the glow plug system fully functional.

❗ A good tip for a diesel vehicle with a DPF is ALWAYS keep the fuel levels above ΒΌ tank.
