🚗 Here we have an Audi A4 3.0 TDI (2006 – 159,705 miles) booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean. The owner booked us in as a multi-vehicle booking and a close friend had recommended us. The owner was already aware of an Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) issue and we had advised him on a course of action when booking in, but still wanted to get it cleaned up anyway before tackling that particular issue. He also had an issue with smoke on acceleration.
🔎 Initial inspection found no issues in the engine bay with no leaks or obvious rattles. The distinctive bass rumble was present from the engine vibration due to carbon buildup although these 3.0 and the prior 2.7 TDIs don’t suffer as badly as the 1.9 and especially the 2.0 TDIs.
💻 Initial diagnostics confirmed an active code for the Intake Manifold Runner Control and Glowplug 4 and historic codes for throttle actuator control (bank 1) and EGR insufficient flow. Once documented and cleared the IMRC code was back on (and the glow plug one was likely to reappear with a cold start).
📊 Live data good with injection amounts all within tolerances, EGR flow looking OK and coolant temperatures in the normal range.
👨🔧 On with the clean and the bass rumble dissipated over time and the throttle response returned and by the end was quieter and crisper on the throttle. The owner can now get the other issues addressed which should help alleviate the smoke completely.
