⚠️ Vehicle not as quiet, smooth, responsive or economical as it used to be? Increased emission levels?
🚗 Here we have an Audi A3 2.0 TDI (2010 – 118,690 miles) booked in initially for diagnostics and subsequently an Engine Carbon Clean.
ℹ️ The owner was concerned over increased emission levels and exhaust smells and potential DPF problems. No black smoke or loss of power reported.
📊 Initial diagnostics found no fault codes in the engine and the few codes for the rest of the vehicle were documented for the owner and cleared down.
🔍 Live data showed coolant temperature levels were normal indicating a working thermostat. DPF data showed healthy backpressures, 99 miles since the last regeneration and normal soot levels indicating no issue with the DPF. All exhaust gas temperature sensors were also fine and injector correction values and rail pressures all looked normal. No more bvious
✔️ With peace of mind regarding the DPF the owner opted for an Engine Carbon Clean to get the source of the dirt cleaned up.
Having recently started doing shorter journeys then getting the source of the dirt (engine) cleaned up means
1️⃣ smooth, quiet, efficient engine = less emissions
2️⃣ less emissions = less soot entering the DPF
3️⃣ less soot collected = less frequent regenerations
4️⃣ fewer regenerations = fuel saving and fewer issues
👨🔧 The engine had the typical bass note from carbon buildup and this soon dissipated. Once the engine had really quietened down then we started to pick up on a background noise that is likely the source of the smell – a very small and faint exhaust blow. We recommended the owner gets the exhaust joints checked for potential leaks.
With the clean complete it was much quieter, smooth and responsive again with far less smell than before and a way forward to investigate eliminating the smell completely.
