ā ļø Vehicle not running like it should? Poor fuel economy, smoke issues, noisy or sluggish?
š Here we have a VW Crafter 2.5 TDI (2009 – 261,960 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and potential Engine Carbon Clean or DPF Clean based on the findings.
ā¹ļø The owner had reported frequent issues with smoke (every day) from the vehicle with elevated RPM at idle along with poor fuel economy. After taking it to multiple garages he was no further forward as no codes were present.
š Initial inspection found little of note in the engine bay with no obvious rattles or leaks.
š» Initial diagnostics found no engine codes present as suggested.
š Live data monitoring showed good values across most components, however it was only running at 68Ā°C coolant temperature despite having just been taken on a long run. When stress tested the hottest we could get this to was 74Ā°C indicating an issue with the coolant system – most likely the thermostat (occasionally could be the temperature sensor or a pump/blockage issue).
šØāš§ After a discussion with the owner he requested we proceed with the Engine Carbon Clean so we gave it an extended session given it was running cool. The bass note from the engine soon subsided as the engine smoothed out and by the end was quiet, smooth and responsive again . The owner can now get the coolant system checked and thermostat/sensor replaced and hopefully this will then be back to normal running again.
