â ī¸ Vehicle failed or struggling to get through emissions on MOT? Poor fuel economy, smoke issues and general poor performance?
đ Here we have a VW Caddy 2.0 SDI (2007 – 95,208 miles) booked in for diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean.
âšī¸ The vehicle was booked in for investigation after failing emissions on the MOT.
đ Initial inspection found no obvious rattles or leaks, but there was a tell tale bass rumble to the engine and sluggishness underfoot. There was also a slight wobble detected amongst the overall engine vibration – a possible engine mount issue.
đģ Initial diagnostics found little of note with some old codes which we documented, sent to the owner and cleared down.
đ Live data monitoring showed a different story though. Initial temperature was approx 68°C. Under the right conditions we managed to nurse is up to 83°C, but when tested it dropped to 72°C again within a minute.
âA cold running vehicle will overfuel to compensate and will lower fuel economy and increase emissions. A new thermostat required in this one.
đ¨âđ§ With it warmed back up again it was on with the clean and after just ten minutes the bass note started to go, the engine smoothed out and quietened down and by the end it was much quieter, smooth and responsive again. The wobble on idle remained which again indicated worn engine mount.
The owner can now get a new thermostat fitted and this should then get through the MOT.
