Diagnostic consultation and Engine Carbon Clean on a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (2007 – 141,583 miles)

⚠️ Running issues? Smoky, noisy, sluggish or thirsty on fuel?

πŸš— Here we have a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (2007 – 141,583 miles) booked in for diagnostics and Engine Carbon Clean after getting noisy, smoky (black smoke) and generally not running as well as it should.

The owner reported:
1️⃣ black smoke when accelerating, but no loss of power
2️⃣ The car struggling and smoking in particular when cold

ℹ️ On arrival there was a clear chatter and vibration from the clutch which the owner was already aware of and the vehicle had not had an oil change for a long time so both those were recommended ASAP after the clean.

πŸ“Š Initial diagnostics showed no engine codes present. EGR flow rates looked fine, but injector fuelling looked a little on the high side.

✴️ With black smoke issues it is down to a fuel:air imbalance causing over fuelling. With any kind of leak you normally get a loss of power (and an associated engine code stored) and the owner was reporting no power loss which concurred with no codes stored. No obvious leaks could be detected from the pipework also so on with the clean.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§ As we started with the clean we had to proceed with the clutch held in to listen properly to progress.

πŸ“Š With the clutch held in the injector fuelling values were pretty steady (if slightly raised on injector 3 in particular), but with the clutch released the values were jumping around a fair bit. This would certainly explain the cold start issues as the clutch would exacerbate the vibration of the engine when cold and was affecting the fuelling.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§ As we progressed the engine quietened down, smoothed out and the injector fuelling trimmed in to some extent across the board with just the one injector remaining a little higher than the others potentially indicating some wear on that injector. By the end it was as smooth and quiet as possible (with the clutch pedal depressed).

❗Action plan for the owner was an oil change and then the flywheel/clutch.
