A Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 diesel booked in with some black smoke issues and an occasional erratic idle.

⚠️ Here’s one from earlier where we did not proceed with any cleaning.

A Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 diesel booked in with some black smoke issues and an occasional erratic idle.

📊 Initial diagnostics showed an error code for the glow plug controller and also for the MAF sensor.

🔍 Engine bay inspection showed that the pipe from just past the MAF sensor down towards the turbo was not attached properly and the metal clip missing – this may well explain the MAF errors (assuming the sensor is OK) and also the black smoke issues.

We connected this back up and temporarily fixed into place until the owner can get a proper clip in place to hold it.

The owner had been informed the dashboard coolant temperature dial was not working properly, but the diagnostics live data showed the coolant temperature fluctuating wildly from 5°C to 65°C which loosely matched the temperature display on the dashboard. This would indicate an issue with the coolant temperature sensor and/or maybe the thermostat (less likely).

With the above two issues and the glow plug controller codes reappearing immediately on clearing we suggested the owner get this into a garage to have the 3 issues above rectified.

1) new clip on the intake hose and confirm the MAF is OK once done.
2) coolant temperature sensor replaced and check the thermostat is OK once done.
3) Glow plug controller replaced.

No clean performed here as always best to rectify mechanical/electrical issues prior to any cleaning.
